Leilani (age 16) writes, “hi, im 16 and i’m having symptoms of pregnancy. My breasts are tender/sore but arent that sore. I’m very tired. I’m nausea, and i threw up last night. I feel very bloated and my lower ab is round. I last had my period april 31 and ended may 6. Me and my bf last had sex sometime in april and we usually wear a condom then take it off and he pulls out. I took a pregnancy test 3 days ago and it came out negative. Could i still be pregnant??“
Thank you for your question. If you had sex in April but had your last regular period from April 31 through May 6, then you shouldn’t be pregnant. If you’d missed your April 31-May 6 period, then a pregnancy test would have been definitely needed.
Since you had your regular period, that means a potentially fertilized egg didn’t attach itself to your uterine wall and it didn’t begin producing hCG (which is what a pregnancy test will look for in your urine). If an egg attaches itself to your uterine wall (implantation), then your body needs the extra blood your body produces each month and you would have missed your regular period. Instead, you might have experienced some light bleeding or spotting, but it would have been noticeably different than your typical period. The fact that you did have your period should be assurance that you are not pregnant.
Assuming then that you are not pregnant, keep in mind that the symptoms you are experiencing can be caused by numerous things, including getting a virus or coming down with the flu. My best guess is that you are coming down with something or else ate something that completely didn’t agree with you (but I’d place my money on the first guess). Please keep us posted.
