My guess is that no, you are not pregnant. The reason why I say that is because
- You had sex early in your monthly cycle (it’s possible to get pregnant then, but the odds are slim). Having sex on May 4th would minimize the chance of sperm coming in contact with your egg once you ovulated. While sperm can stay alive in you for several days, your egg will only be “fertilizable” for 24-48 hours, and, if sperm was still in your body up through May 9th, even if you ovulated earlier than the typical 15th day of your period (counting April 28 as the first day with May 10th being day 15), there probably wouldn’t be enough sperm left in your system to do their job.
- You took the Next Choice pills right after having unprotected sex. Taken right away, they have a 90% success rate. The longer you wait to take them, however, the more the probability for pregnancy increases.
So, while my first reason has some possible “flaws” in it, I think that when we mix both reasons together, we’ve got a good “case” for you not being pregnant.
As far as your period being late, from my experience, it’s not uncommon at all for people to get their cycles messed up after taking Next Choice (or other forms of emergency contraception). Plus, being worried about possibly being pregnant is going to affect your period’s timeliness all the more. I wouldn’t worry too much about your breasts aching as that could be caused by the high hormone dosage from Next Choice or something else.
If you want to completely ease yourself, I’d recommend taking a home pregnancy test, but I’ll put my money on it being negative.

Okay, my boyfriend and I ha sex on June 1, 2011. He wore a condom, but due to the fact that I wasn’t particularly wet enough, the condom broke. We didn’t realize it until after he came inside me. It wasn’t just a small hole, the whole condom was completely broken. I know it is too early to tell if I’m pregnant, but I was wondering if you could give some reassurance that I’m NOT pregnant.
Here is why I suspect I’m not pregnant:
I was technically still on my period (even though I wasn’t bleeding) My period started on May 26, 2011, and it lasted about 5 days. I had sex on the 6th day. However, my normal cycle lasts about 6-7 days.
I’m going to take a pregnancy test on June 24th (the day after my next period is due) but until then I would really appreciate some reassurance that I’m most likely not pregnant. :)

You’re right – you should be fine. While there have been some who have gotten pregnant around the time their period was taking place, those documented instances are few and far between. Definitely go ahead and take a pregnancy test around the 24th (personally, I’d plan to take it around the 28th if I were you and my period hadn’t come by then). However, having sex on June 1st means your chances are pretty, pretty slim.

Hi, I’m 16 years old and my boyfriend and I have unprotected sex alot but we always stop before he finishes.
Last month the condom broke so I got the emergency contraception pill and my period came as usual after that.
Since then we’ve had sex without protection but him always pulling out. I was meant to get my period 2 days ago but havnt gotten it. I feel your pain and worries! To really help you, I need to get a clearer idea of when things took place, in other words, (1) the day you had sex & the condom broke; (2) how long after that you took Plan B [or similar]; and (3) the day your period started. If #1-3 all happened very closely together (I’m speaking in terms of just a couple days), then, assuming you aren’t pregnant, my best guess would be that the emergency contraception pill you took is just causing your latest period (the one that you should have gotten 2 days ago) to be delayed or skipped altogether. And that’s not all uncommon as a side effect of Plan B. I would definitely still go ahead and take a home pregnancy test, but let’s keep our fingers tightly crossed and hope it reads negative like I believe it should.

The condom broke on may 1st and I got my period on the 8th, which was when I expected it. I took the emergency contraceptive pill literally a couple of hours after we had sex on the 1stz

Yes, you should be fine. I’m surprised you still had your first period on the 8th, a week after taking the emergency contraceptive pill, but since you took the pill so quickly after the condom broke, your chances would be very slim for getting pregnant. If some semen got inside you from the broken condom, then, yes, there would be a chance, but the pill would take care of most of that chance leaving you with just a tiny remaining chance. Go ahead and take the pregnancy test, but you should be fine.

we’ve had unprotected sex since the emergency contraceptive pill, he never finished inside me but because I havnt gotten this months period when I was meant to I’m worried because I heard about something called pre- ejaculation which can apparently also get you pregnant.

Yep, most likely (98% in my mind) just a side effect of the pill, and, on another note, it’s rare to get pregnant from any pre-ejaculation fluid. However, sometimes guys say they pulled out in time when they actually did still let out an actual “squirt” of semen, and a person can get pregnant from that. You should be fine, though.

You had sex most likely around the time when you could get pregnant. Since you took the Next Choice pill about 24 hrs later, you probably took it in time for it to have its effect. There is still a chance, however, and it would be best to take a pregnancy test. For the most accurate results, I would recommend to take a home pregnancy test around July 10; you’ll want to read the instructions on the package carefully and take it with your concentrated urine (first pee of the morning). Hopefully (we’ll cross our fingers), the test will read negative.

You should be fine, Amber. If, however, you miss two pills back to back, then it’s best to use a condom when having sex the rest if the month.

So I’ve been having sex with my buddy since May. We’ve always been careful to do it protected. The first time it broke was on June 15&16 2011 (we always did it late at night because of work). So my last period came on June 11th-16th. My and my friend had sex at around 12:00am-3:30am. But our condom broke. I took next choice on the second day (around 2 or 3 pm) and that was that. I had my period from June 3rd to June 7th. I had sex with my boyfriend on June 11th. I am not on birth control and he did not wear a condom, however, he did not ejaculate inside me. Most likely, the bleeding you are describing you experienced on June 18 is what we call “withdrawal bleed”; this bleeding is caused by the change in hormone level caused by taking Plan B (which is a huge dose of progestin, the same drug found in many birth control pills). Withdrawal bleed is most common when Plan B is taken early in your menstrual cycle (which fits your description pretty well). I would highly doubt that you are pregnant (the chance is extremely slim). Plan B is known to make the next period be delayed or even skipped. Based on this, you should be fine. If you do miss a 2nd period after taking Plan B, then it would be good to talk with your OB/Gyn just to make sure everything is ok.

Going off birth control could be causing some of your problems. (Why did you stop taking it? Had you been on birth control for a while?) When you’re on most daily birth control pills, you may have a monthly “period”, but it’s not really a period because the pills cause your ovulation to be on hold. Quitting birth control, however, permits your body to once again resume ovulating, and so your real periods also resume. Sometimes it may take a couple months before your body returns to normal. Even so, I would still strongly recommend you take a home pregnancy test.

You should be fine since you took Next Choice so close in time to having sex. Next Choice can cause your next period’s timing to either be early, late or, sometimes, skipped entirely. In a couple weeks, if you still haven’t had your period, you could take a home pregnancy test; however, it should come back negative.

By taking Next Choice so soon after the incident (and he’s very dumb indeed!), you should be ok. There’s a slight probability that you may have become pregnant, but an extremely high probability that the emergency contraception was effective. Note that your next period may be delayed or skipped altogether. If your next expected period doesn’t come, I would recommend taking a home pregnancy test around the time that the period should have ended. Take the HPT first thing in the morning with your concentrated urine. It should come back negative, and that will help relieve your concerns.
I’m seventeen. I had unprotected sex on the 2nd of September, i think& took Next Choice the day after. The period before this started on August 20th & ended on the 26th.
