Dear Shakira,

I’m a little puzzled here. Could you tell me what kind of “pills” you took after having sex with your boyfriend? I’m assuming the pills were not normal birth control pills but emergency contraceptive pills such as the i-pill or Next Choice or Plan B. Assuming that you took some sort of emergency contraceptive the next evening after you had sex, it’s not uncommon to experience what may appear to be a period; we call that withdrawal bleeding, and it tends to occur when you take emergency contraceptives shortly after your last period ended. Based on this, no, I don’t believe that you are pregnant.

However, it always pays to be certain with a pregnancy test, as you mentioned. For best results, you’ll want to take the 1st home pregnancy test about 30 days after your last “real” period ended (ignoring the withdrawal bleeding). Then, if that one is negative, you can take a 2nd home pregnancy test about a week later. My bet is that both will come back negative. Your chance for becoming pregnant is very slim.

Best luck,
Hannah

I recently stopped my pill, two weeks ago on Wednesday morning. I was on week three on the pack, exactly a week before my sugar pills where I would have my period. That same Wednesday’s night my boyfriend ejaculated on (not in) my vagina and fingered me with seman on his hands. I have since missed when my period would have been on the pill, last week on Wednesday. But, I did have a withdrawl bleed on what I think was the Friday after I stopped my birth control pill and ended on Tuesday (the day before I would have expected my period on the pill); though, I’m not entirely certain of the days of my withdrawl bleed. Additionally, and my memory is spotty on this one too, but I can’t be sure I took my BC reliably up until the date I officially stopped it. I was notoriously forgetful of taking my pills; though, I did always make them up. Also, my boyfriend and I were further intimate; once was within the days of my withdrawl bleed where he used a condom that broke but he did not ejaculate; another time was this last and most recent Friday where we were (and I cringe at the use of this word) humping without clothes on and he entered me just a teeny bit for a very small amount of time before putting on a condom.

I’m wondering what the possibility of pregnancy is and when I would be able to test since I don’t have an expected period date as coming off the pill can make menstruation a little wacky.
