My period started the 28th of July and ended August 2nd. I had sex the 8th of August and my boyfriend came inside. I took Next choice about 2-3 days after we had unprotected sex. (can’t remember how many days exactly). I wasn’t really worried at first, but now my period is 24 days late. Should I be worried? Should I take a pregnancy test?

Dear Alice,
I would definitely recommend you take a pregnancy test. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully and use your concentrated first-thing-in-the-morning pee. Hopefully it will come back negative. If it is negative, then I would blame the Next Choice pill on the reason for why your period is late (which can be a side effect of taking Next Choice and similar morning after pills). However, you’d better fly out quickly and get the pregnancy test to take first thing tomorrow morning.
In the future, the sooner you take Next Choice (or Plan B) after having unprotected sex, the less likely you are of getting pregnant. The longer you wait, the higher your probability for becoming pregnant gets. A 12 hour delay is fine; 24 hours is still usually ok. 36 begins to increase your odds of becoming pregnant. 48 hours is when you start to gamble with time. Beyond 72 hours is when your odds of becoming pregnant really escalate.
Best luck,
Hannah
