Sandy (age 16) writes, ‘Dear hannah, well i have been sexually active since january. but we have only done it about 5 times. in april we did it for the last time, but we had unprotected sex. he masturbated before and he tried to take it out before it cummed. i am unsure if he did or not but he says hes pretty sure. now i have been feeling very sick for the past two weeks and i took 2 pregnancy tests which both showed positive… i was scared about missing my period because it was late over a week. i barely started it now but i still feel the same… could i be pregnant?“
Did I read correctly that you took two pregnancy tests and they both read positive? Are you completely certain that you carefully followed the directions on/inside the package and you checked within the specific time allotted? And now your regular period is back? Is it a light period or just spotting or are you sure that it is your full fledged period?
Here are my thoughts:
A home pregnancy test seldom ever lies. Now, it is possible for a person to take a home pregnancy test (for purposes of illustration, we’ll use a common HPT that relies on a line appearing to indicate a positive result), and if they look at the HPT a half hour or more after putting a drop or two of urine on it, that urine can evaporate leaving behind a faint line; we call this an evaporation line (which would be a false positive). A true positive on a home pregnancy test will show up in just a couple minutes, and the HPT instructions will tell you the brief timeframe during which you should look for a positive or negative result. If you carefully followed the HPT instructions and it came back positive, then that means only one thing – it detected hCG in your body and you were pregnant at the time of taking the test. (Pregnancy produces hCG.)
Now, some women experience spotting (i.e. implantation bleeding) after becoming pregnant. It’s noticeably a lot different than your normal period or even a lighter version of your period. Spotting is spotting.
If you actually just experienced bleeding somewhat similar to your regular period yet you had two home pregnancy tests which were positive, then there is a high likelihood that you had a miscarriage. If this is the case, it would be best to see your doctor (if you were in a position where you could do so).
Please keep us posted, Sandy. We hope you come through all this ok!
yes i am sure that i took the tests correctly. i checked the test after only a couple of minutes just because i was terribly scared. ive been feeling stressed out for the past 3 days because the “father” did not want to deal with this situation. and my “period” came pretty strong yesterday. it was very light at first i only felt light cramps and then after a couple of fights i had with him, i began bleeding a lot and i began feeling a strong sharp pain on my left side. last night i wasnt even able to sleep because of the pain of my lower back. and i dont know why….
It does sound like a miscarriage. If you are able to, I would strongly recommend you check with your doctor just to confirm. They’ll run a blood pregnancy test which will be able to measure the level of hCG in your blood (probably still some there but at a lower level than expected which would indicate a miscarriage).
thanks for your advice and i am going to have my friend take me to the doctor to be able to confirm this. is it bad if it was a miscarriage. will i be able to get pregnant again?
Miscarriages in the early weeks are quite common. It’s estimated that 10-15% of “clinically recognized pregnancies” end in a miscarriage during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy. Most likely, there is no need to be concerned.
Your period will stop altegother if you are pregnant, and pulling out, jumping up and down after sex, etc, from what I understand do not work when it comes to preventing pregnancy. Its good that you are using birth control and a condom, but its still a bit of a risk because you can still get pregnant even when using both. Its still the own persons choice, but for me I think I will wait until I get married and am able to care for a child incase I where to get pregnant.
well.. thanks once again for the advice. And if it is a miscarriage, then it just happened for the best.
My last period started sometime in January, around January 14th or 15th and it lasted anywhere from 3 to 7 days. I missed my period the month after (in February) and took one test, which came up negative, so that gave me no good reason to test again. I waited about a week, only to see that my period still hadn’t shown and took another test which also came up negative. I waited until March and took two more which both came up yet again, negative. Afterwards, I waited about three weeks or so and took another tst on April 74th, expecting a negative, it came out positive no longer than than after I squeezed the pee drops on to the test as instructed. I took another two that night, that also came up positive… I also took one the day after that and it came out positive. I waited a day and yet again took another one, which also came up positive. But, I suppose I’m getting mixed signals, because no sooner than I had taken the positive tests, I had a lot of cramping… Some brown blood and not it seems as though I’m bleeding, this is only been a day since I took the last test. I really need help. Also, we don’t use condoms and I don’t take birth control. I’ve had irregular periods in the past though. Please help me.
I took another test on APRIL SEVENTH! Sorry.

I took a test because my period was 3 days late, after urinating on the stick nothing came about so I tossed it in the trash and went to sleep, when I awoke the next morning it I looked in the garbage to see if it had shown anything…..THE TEST WAS POSITIVE….started spotting that same day next day it was bleeding regulary….what does this mean.
