Sandy (age 16) writes, ‘Dear hannah, well i have been sexually active since january. but we have only done it about 5 times. in april we did it for the last time, but we had unprotected sex. he masturbated before and he tried to take it out before it cummed. i am unsure if he did or not but he says hes pretty sure. now i have been feeling very sick for the past two weeks and i took 2 pregnancy tests which both showed positive… i was scared about missing my period because it was late over a week. i barely started it now but i still feel the same… could i be pregnant?“
Did I read correctly that you took two pregnancy tests and they both read positive? Are you completely certain that you carefully followed the directions on/inside the package and you checked within the specific time allotted? And now your regular period is back? Is it a light period or just spotting or are you sure that it is your full fledged period?
Here are my thoughts:
A home pregnancy test seldom ever lies. Now, it is possible for a person to take a home pregnancy test (for purposes of illustration, we’ll use a common HPT that relies on a line appearing to indicate a positive result), and if they look at the HPT a half hour or more after putting a drop or two of urine on it, that urine can evaporate leaving behind a faint line; we call this an evaporation line (which would be a false positive). A true positive on a home pregnancy test will show up in just a couple minutes, and the HPT instructions will tell you the brief timeframe during which you should look for a positive or negative result. If you carefully followed the HPT instructions and it came back positive, then that means only one thing – it detected hCG in your body and you were pregnant at the time of taking the test. (Pregnancy produces hCG.)
Now, some women experience spotting (i.e. implantation bleeding) after becoming pregnant. It’s noticeably a lot different than your normal period or even a lighter version of your period. Spotting is spotting.
If you actually just experienced bleeding somewhat similar to your regular period yet you had two home pregnancy tests which were positive, then there is a high likelihood that you had a miscarriage. If this is the case, it would be best to see your doctor (if you were in a position where you could do so).
Please keep us posted, Sandy. We hope you come through all this ok!
