Bri (age 20) writes, “i had my period may first and during ovulation week me and my husband had sex many times, this last week i had some spotting, i am so much more tired and i am hungrier than normal, also i have had slight cramps along with the spotting, my breasts have become tender and i am urinating more often, i took a home pregnancy test but it was negative on saturday, could i still be pregnant?”

Bri,
Are you trying to get pregnant? Were you on any type of birth control medication? If fertilization did occur, it may be too early for a home pregnancy test to detect any hCG in your urine. Your symptoms could indicate that you are pregnant, but they also could be indicative of other things. I’d recommend taking another pregnancy test this Saturday and, if that one was negative, taking another one the following Saturday.

Dear Hanna, I have recently had a miscarriage. I have no doubt that, when I told some of my friends that I was pregnant and one decided to hit me in the stomach that that was the cause of my loss. I lost my child this past Friday and have a few questions for you. I am still dizzy and sick to my stomach. Could this be because hormones left over form my pregnancy?
Hannah says
Hey Megan,
How far along in your pregnancy were you when you had the miscarriage? Did you see a physician as a result of your miscarriage? Did they tell you what kind of miscarriage it was (the technical term – i.e. complete miscarriage, incomplete miscarriage, delayed miscarriage, etc)?

Megan says
Dear Hannah, I went to the doctor after the miscarriage happened. I told her that the entire sac came out with the baby in it and she said that it was a “complete miscarriage” I am not totally sure what that is. She was really nice but not very informative. I probably should have asked questions but I was very upset. I still am but I have gotten back some stability. I still have some symptoms of pregnancy but know that I am not and I am still bleeding. She told me that it should stop shortly but I am not sure if that ment hours or a few days. Could you help me?
Hannah says
Megan,
A complete miscarriage means that your body has completely expelled the fetus and your womb is now empty and your cervix is closed. Other forms of miscarriage may require follow up medical attention (or even surgery), but a complete miscarriage doesn’t typically need medical followup.
I’m really sorry to hear about the loss of your child. I haven’t personally experienced a miscarriage, so I can’t say that I know exactly what you are going through. However, I do remember when I was about 8 yrs old and my mom had a miscarriage and how devastating it was. She was several months along and had to go to the hospital for some sort of procedure after they discovered the baby had wrapped the umbilical cord around its neck. It made a mark in my life then and I can still see in my mind pictures of her standing next to a bookshelf in the living room grieving. I know it’s not easy at all.
The symptoms that result from a complete miscarriage can vary. Typically, the further along you were in your pregnancy, the more involved the aftereffects will be (emotionally, physically, etc.). Bleeding may last several days – and this will vary from person to person. I’d say that if you are still experiencing bleeding after 3 to 4 days to give your doctor a call to see what she has to say. And, if you experience any kind of heavy bleeding, to definitely call her. That’s what she’s there for – to help you (even though, sometimes, the professionalism can get in the way).
Megan says
Dear Hannah, I am sorry to hear about your loss and am thankful for some intelligent advice and information. Of course I will go back to my doctor anyways at my next scheduled date but this information you have given me has allowed me to make a decision on if I should make an emergency call or not! I thank you so very much! And have just one more question, is there a certain amount of tiMe that you feel a woman should wait after a miscarriage? I asked my doctor and age didn’t give me a direct answer “let’s see how you feel when you come in next time” I go in later this week. But I am about to get married and we both really want a child.
Hannah says
Megan,
The majority of women are able to become pregnant right after having a miscarriage. Sometimes people get worried if they have two miscarriages back to back, but they’re still normal. It’s estimated that 10-25% of clinically recognized pregnancies will end in miscarriage, so the vast majority of women have experienced a miscarriage in one form or other (and many never may even be aware what happened).
The ones that have a miscarriage later in the pregnancy are usually the ones that experience the most grief. Just imagine your family and friends being all excited and having bought cute baby outfits, toys, etc. and then you’re no longer pregnant. In those cases, many of them just don’t know what to say and they might even avoid you. In cases like the latter, sometimes women in these situations may not want to even think about trying to get pregnant again much less even having sex for a little while (which will vary from woman to woman).
The best thing really is to pick up where you left off. Begin the healing process if you need such. You can become pregnant virtually right after a miscarriage (your body will typically return to “normal”). In the event that you have several miscarriages back to back, then I’d definitely recommend you see your doctor to see if something more serious might be underlying the miscarriages. Typically, a miscarriage is your body’s way of making sure each and every pregnancy you have goes proper the way that it should.
Hope your wedding goes well!

I am 16 years of age and in the last couple of weeks my breast and nipples have become very tender? And I have also experienced slight cramps, I have took a home pregnancy test to make sure and it was negative, what could be wrong with me?
Hannah says
When was your last period? How long (i.e. since what age) have you been having your regular period? Tender breasts and nipples (as well as cramps) are frequently experienced during ovulation. They can also be triggered by excessive stress, intensive activity or certain foods. Have you been experiencing any of these lately?
Casey says
hi there, i am on the levelen pill, have been on it for 2 years, but have recently noticed that i have been getting bad lower back pain, craps in my lower stomach and tender breasts, dose this mean i am pregnant please help me??
Hannah says
Dear Casey,
If you’ve been faithfully taking the Levlen birth control pill, the probability of getting pregnant is very slim. My guess is that the symptoms you’re describing are being caused by something else and that you’re not pregnant. You could always take a home pregnancy test just to make sure (but you’d need to wait until the time your next period should start in order for the pregnancy test to be able to be a reasonable indicator).

im currently not using contriception as my partner n i are trying for a baby. I was expecting my cycle mid this week..experienced some abdominal cramps which made me think it was on its way in the next day or so but instead i had a small spot of brown discharge and no longer experienced the abdominal cramps. over the past wk iv also been experiencing tender breasts n nipples, mild headaches, tired eyes and every now n then i feel a brief dull ache in my abdomine. im now 4 days past my expected cycle date, to which iv felt rather moody without explanation. im a frequent urinater natrually but lately it seems like the urge to go is greater than the amount produced. i plan to wait another week before taking a pregnancy test but wanted to see what your thoughts were.

Hi Hannah,
I have one question. We have been trying to conceive for the past 4 years and to date, nothing yet. My last period was on the 9th of March, we had unprotected sex on the days before and on ovuluation. I am now almost due for my period, it is suppose to start on the 9th of April and this morning (6th of April 3 days before the period) I noticed some dark spotting. Can this mean that I am pregnant or is this a sign of something else?
Thanks Mienkie

hi! I am 16 years old and was wondering:
Is it possible for me to be pregnant from an indirect encounter with sperm on my vagina? I had only taken my birth control for the first time the day before, so I know it was ineffective. I had my last period on January 16, and this encounter occurrrd on the 30 of January. I have begun experiencing pregnancy symptoms within the last month such as breast tenderness, cramping, and weight gain, and even nausea. I attributed these symptoms, including my last two missed periods, to my faithfully taken birth control. Is pregnancy a possibility?

hi, i’m 20 years old. i had sex May 3 and again on the 27. I had my period may 8-13. i began spotting may 23- 25. now it’s june 5 and my breasts are slightly sore and my nipples are extremely sore. i took a hpt last week and it was negative. i’ve never had sore breasts before my period. this is a first for me. i’m due for my next period sometime this week. could i be pregnant?
Hannah says
Gabby,
It’s possible to have breast/nipple soreness right before your period starts. Taking a HPT last week was probably a bit too early to detect enough hCG in your urine; you’d want to take another HPT around June 10 or so (and then, take it first thing in the morning with your concentrated urine).
Are you trying to get pregnant? Are you on any kind of birth control medication or have you recently stopped taking birth control? Have you been pregnant before? Have you started or changed your exercise regimen or done any major changes to your diet?

Hey Hannah,
I have currently been on birth control for a little under a month. My last period was on July 29 and 2 weeks before that i started having cramps almost like menstrual cramps but lighter.. when i finally got my period the pains were aol horrible that i could not stop crying. I literally was not able to get out of bed. The pains were pretty bad for about a week. I started birth control the second day after me period but now for the past few weeks I’ve been having tender and swollen breasts really nauseous craving and eating a lot of thing and now I have some sort of brownish mucousy discharge… It’s mostly clear but sometimes there’s a bit of brown mucous spots. Not to mention that before I got my period my bf and I had a little mistake and came inside me. Now i want to know if all these things happening to my body could possibly mean that I’m pregnant or just the birth control.. sorry for the long message. PLEASE HELP

hey hannah,
I’ve recently fooled around with my bf (4 weeks ago) and I am starting to get slight lower abdominal pain and tender nipples that have grown a bit more than usual. We’ve never had sex, his penis just rubbed within my labia and touched the outer wall of my vagina for 2 seconds but he did not “come” in that sense. I’ve taken 3 pregnancies test which have all concluded that I am not pregnant. But I am still confused to my body symptoms. Is it being caused because I’m thinking about it too much or due to my period? I am also very irregular with my period, getting it once every 2-3 months. The last time I had my period was last month.

Hi Hannah i have a question me and my bf had sex three days before i ovulated and we didnt use any protection. Ever since then i have had cramps, pressure, twinges and have been bloated.I also have been experiencing dull aches on both sides of my upper thighs. Af isnt due until Nov 5 and its too early for af could this be signs of implantation? I also forgot to mention i also have alot of cm in the pass week.
Hannah says
Having sex that close to ovulation (even before ovulation) puts you in the very risky zone for becoming pregnant. Sperm can have a pretty long lifespan once it’s deep inside you. It’s hard to say exactly what you might be experiencing. My initial thought is that it’s too early for you to really “feel” much if indeed there was fertilization and successful implantation. However, some girls have definitely been super sensitive and have noticed some body changes right away. Others don’t notice for weeks! I would definitely take a pregnancy test if your period doesn’t come when expected. For best results, I would wait to take it until Nov 10. You could take one Nov 5, but if it comes back negative, we won’t know for sure; we’ll just know that the test may not have been sensitive enough to detect an adequate level of hCG in your urine.
