I Took Plan B Twice, Negative HPT but No Period

Worried#2 writes, “I should expect my period on april 4th. But the day before, april 3rd, me and my partner had sex and the condom broke. I was scare so we went and got plan b within the 24hrs. Got my period on april 7th and that was the last time. Til this day still no period.I’m not much worried bout that cuz I had already tooken a test on may 12th and it came out negative. But may 13th, my partner and I had sex and condom broke again. I went and got plan b again but took it within the 48hrs. I know plan b is not good to use everytime there is an “uh-oh”. I already have 1 kid and so I did just to be on the safe side. I plan to get on the IUD when I start my period again. My question is, am I likely to be pregnant?

Dear Worried#2,

It really comes down to probability and the effects of Plan B on your system. Typically, with Plan B, they say that if you take the dosage within 24 hours, 95% of pregnancies are prevented, while if you take the dosage within 48 hrs, it drops to 85%, and then it drops to 60% for those who take the dosage within 72 hours. Your first time having sex with the broken condom (April 3), probably didn’t result in pregnancy due to the time of month (slight risk) and the fact that you took Plan B so close to the event.

Was your period on April 7 your full & regular period or was it just spotting? It’s not uncommon to experience several days of spotting a few days after taking Plan B.

As far as your chances of getting pregnant the second time the condom broke (May 13), let’s look at a couple more factors to consider with Plan B: Plan B is a very high dosage of the pregnancy hormone (progestins). Taking a dose (or 2 separate doses, in your case) of Plan B can easily “mess up” your menstrual cycle. After the first dosage of Plan B, you could expect your fertility to return within a cycle or two; because you took a second dosage of Plan B, your fertility may be delayed even longer (and, this will vary from person to person). Many who have taken Plan B have experienced irregularities with their next period: the timing may be thrown off, the menstrual bleeding may be heavier, or the bleeding may be lighter.

I would say that the probability is in your favor, and that the chances you are pregnant are slim. The only way you can be assured of this will be to take a couple more pregnancy tests. Wait a week or so and then take one; then, if it’s negative, wait two more weeks and take another one.

Best of luck,

Hannah

    Hannah,
Yes, on April 7th, it was a normal period just like any other times. Thank you so much for the reply, it helps A LOT! I got one more question, is plan b and next choice the same or which one works better?

    • Hannah says:

Plan B is a brand name for a particular morning after pill. Originally, it came out as a two pill dosage. Recently, the manufacture of Plan B began making a one pill version which is called Plan B One Step. Typically, Plan B tends to have fewer side effects than other morning after pills. Next Choice is a generic product (i.e. non name brand version) that is “pharmaceutically equivalent” to the two pill dosage of Plan B.

  2. Worried#2 says:

I have heard that you can take two pills at one time instead waiting to take the second pill 12hours later. Is it true and if it is, would the chance of being pregnant be slimmer?

    • Hannah says:

Yes, there is the original Plan B which was two separate doses and there is the newer one pill Plan B (i.e. Plan B One Step). Some Planned Parenthood staff have been known to tell people that it’s ok to take both of the doses with the original Plan B at the same time. It’s a huge dosage of the pregnancy hormone.

Personally, I would say that taking the one pill Plan B One Step would be “safer” than taking both of the original Plan B pills simultaneously since the makers of Plan B intended Plan B One Step to be taken that way while they intended the two pills to be staggered. I would conjecture that taking the two Plan B pills at the same time might result in additional unwanted side effects because of the very high hormone dosage (possibly higher than the hormone dosage in just the one pill of Plan B One Step).

It’s definitely something I’m planning to look into some more, so don’t take my answer as the final word! I’ve got some “investigating” to do =] If a person asks for Plan B but it has been two days or so since they had sex, that’s when, I’ve been told, some PP staff have said to take both pills simultaneously to minimize the risk of becoming pregnant.

  3. Worried#2 says:

Since I haven’t had my period this month, am I suppose to get it anytime soon because I had taken the plan b second time or my period will skip completely?

  4. Hannah says:

I’d say your body is a bit out of whack. So you might find yourself on a new monthly timetable (ie your period might start at an odd time of the month). It’s really up to your body and how it deals with the double whammy hormone dose. It might choose to totally skip and then resume, or it might just set it off a couple weeks. Keep us posted if you think about it!

  5. Worried#2 says:

Meaning I wouldn’t know if the it works until I take a test?

  6. Hannah says:

Your chances of being pregnant are slim, but, yes, if your period doesn’t resume in a month then only a couple more pregnancy tests (taken staggered over a couple weeks) coming back negative will be able to give you the “proof” that you need that you’re not pregnant.

  7. Worried#2 says:

Sorry I have so many questions because I’m so worry! Thank you for answering all of them. =]

  8. too many plan Bs says:

    Hannah,

I took Plan B three times in May. I should know better, but always freak out even when I use condoms and nothing goes wrong during intercourse.

My boyfriend and I had sex with a condom on May 4 and I took Plan B on May 6. I got my period on May 7. We had sex again, also with a condom, on May 17 and I took Plan B on May 18.

We had anal sex, without a condom, on May 25 and the next day I had brown discharge, which I usually get before my period. When I learned that it’s possible to still get pregnant from anal sex, if the sperm oozes out and drips onto the vulva, I freaked out and took Plan B on May 27. I still had brown discharge, but on May 28 I saw less of the discharge. Usually, I keep seeing discharge until the period starts.

The brown discharge, which was a lot, went away by May 28. My period was due today, June 4. My breasts are tender and I have slight cramping, but still no period. I’ve taken multiple pregancy tests which are all negative. I’m worried I won’t get the period this month or not at all. Deep down, I know that I probably just threw off my cycle by a lot, but wanted to get your thoughts.

  9. Hannah says:

I’d say your cycle has just been majorly thrown off by all the Plan Bs. Easy to do. You should be good to go. Right now, your body is just a wee bit confused as to what’s happening because each time you take Plan B, it’s like you’re giving certain parts of your body a command. So, when you do it multiple times within the same month, your “monthly cycle” gets totally confused and doesn’t quite know what a monthly cycle is anymore. Give it a month or two and you should be back to normal. And, better start taking a daily birth control pill (which is like a mini Plan B dose – much, much smaller than the whopper Plan B and more readily handled by your body).

  10. Nikki says:

    To Hannah:

June 1st: I had sex a day after my period but the condom broke.
June 2nd : the condom broke again
I took the next choice pill on June 3rd
Me and my partner had sex again on June 5th & the condom broke again so I took next choice pill again.

I’m really scared of being pregnant and also because i took the pill twice.

Are my chances of being pregnant really high? or slim?

  12. Hannah says:

    So Worried,

You should be fine. See my post on pre-ejaculation fluid here at http://www.onlinepregnancytest.biz/blog/can-precum-get-me-pregnant/

You may experience some side effects due to taking Plan B, and your next period might be a bit early or late. But I wouldn’t be worried about getting pregnant due to what you did.

    Best,
    Hannah

    hi there Hannah,

i have a question to ask. i had my last period on the 2nd of June 2010 and it went on till the 5th. i had sex with my bf on the 6th and 7th and on both occasion he ejaculated in me. i was worried and 8 days later i did a pregnancy test and it was negative i was still worried and on the 1st of July i did another pregnancy test and it was still negative. my period has not come yet for this month which is causing me the worry but i experience irregular periods as sometimes i do get my period only once in every 2 mths. i am currently NOT experiencing any obvious symptoms of early pregnancy such as morning sickness, swelling in breast, nausea etc. is it possible that i might be pregnant? i really hope i am not pregnant as i am not ready to have a baby yet and regret my silly actions of letting my bf ejaculate in me. thanks Hannah

We had sex a f ew days later and we reused the condom, my partner said he didn’t get cum on it or anything and when he put it on it was still tight ad no air was it in, 62 hours left I took plan b on the 12th of July. And now it’s the 24 and still no spotting or period.. I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative.. But could o be pregnant? None of the condoms broke but it’s the sperm draping from is cloths to my bed and on me and the condom. Is my period going to be delayed? Could I be pregnant? And I just noticed my Brest are kinda sore… Help me, please! Am I pregant? And how long till my cycle will recover? Like what’s the chance of me being pregnant? I’m sorry I’m asking so many questions I’m just very worried, can you help me put my mind at ease?

  18. Trying to understand says:

    Hi Hannah,

My boyfriend and I had sex on Sunday, (we’ve been away from each other for a while, upset timeout), the way I feel for him, oh, he gets me wet thinking about it, it’s crazy, sexually anyway.
I tried no to let him indulge me but he heated me up then he snugged it slowly into me and it felt so good with the few pumps, then he pulled and ejaculated on the floor. I asked if he broke in me and he said he ddin’t but I believed that he pre-ejaculated with his excitment. We had sex again on Tuesday the first round he pull out and the other 2 rounds we used condoms.
I got worried on Wednseday after thinking about it. I took Plan B on Thursday Morning and Friday Morning, back to back. I did some research and it said that it can be effective up to 5 days and it take 7 day for the ferfitised egg to make it’s way to the uterus.
Today makes it 1 week since I took the first dose. I’ve had cramps, sensitive breast for a day or two and then it goes back to normanl again. I’m not going ot the bathroom as if I was pregnant, I sleep through the night and just do my morning go.
What are the chances of me being pregnant?

  19. Nicole says:

    Dear Hannah,

  20. Nervous says:

    Hi
I Started my period July 6th 2010 My boyfriend and I had sex and the condom broke and he got off inside me. Very nervous we looked on the internet and noticed that during your period its unlikely that you could get pregnant. Still nervous I immediately went out and got the plan B and took it within 24 hours. My period went on as normal but the lasted what seemed to be 2 weeks with 2nd week being a week of brown discharge only. I was due to start my period On August 3rd and have not yet and it is now aug 6th. I am very nervous and took like 3 home pregnancy tests and they were all clearly negative! I got the tests that say you can find out six days sooner. i just need to know if this is normal or could i really be pregnant please help.

  21. Hannah says:

    Nervous,

I wouldn’t be too stressed out about it if I was you. It sounds like a side effect of taking Plan B. I’d say I’m 95% sure that you are not pregnant (probably could up that a few percentage points!). Wait two weeks and take one more pregnancy test, expecting it to come back negative like the rest, and you should be good to go.

  22. Nicole says:

    Hannah,

I need some insight because my scenario is much different than others I have read on here. Let me start off by saying that I have been on the pill for a little over a year. I’m taking ortho tri cyclen lo. I’m not sure if you know much about this pill, but it’s a 28 day pack; the last 7 are placebos and I normally get my period by the 4th or 5th pill.

I had unprotected sex on July 18th. On this day, I had taken my 3rd placebo, so I was JUST about to get my period. I had remembered after having sex that during that cycle of pills, I hadn’t taken them all at the exact same time. Fearing the possibility of getting pregnant, I took plan b one step on July 18th (44 hours after having unprotected sex).

Because I took plan b, I never got my period. I figured it was because of the extra hormones messed me up. Despite not getting my period, i started my new pack of pills on July 23rd.

I have been taking my pills as I’m supposed to. Except, I had to double up pills one day because I forgot to take one. I haven’t had sex since that time in July by the way. I have been taking my
placebos and I didn’t get my period this month but I have been spotting and have had brown discharge instead. I took two at home pregnancy tests and both came back negative. I’m supposed to start a new pack tomorrow.

Is it possible that I am pregnant or could plan b have messed up my cycle? Any advice/knowledge you may have would be great, thanks!

  23. goingCrazy says:

    Hannah,

Really need your help! My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex July 28th, 2010 and I took the plan b pill 72 hrs later. I got my period the same day I took the pill (aug. 2nd), and my period ended the 9th. I should have got my period sept. 5th, and it is now sept. 13th and nothing! No spotting or anything. I took 3 pregnancy tests and they were all negative…what is your opinion on my situation?

  24. pro-longed period says:

    Hannah,

i took the plan B one step late august and i got my period after that. then i also took it late September and my period started out light in a dark brownish color but it progressed to a normal red flow. My problem is that my period has been on for almost two weeks now and i don’t know if that’s normal after the immense dosage of hormones in my body.

    • Hannah says:

      Dear pro-longed period,

It could very well be because you took Plan B both months. However, my gut feeling is that you should see your doctor to check it out – it never hurts to be doubly safe.

      Best wishes!!
      Hannah

    but it says its negative
should i go see a dr for a blood test since pregrancy test are not 100% accurate???
    im really worried

  26. Hannah says:

    Dear really worried,

If that is the only time you had unprotected sex, then your chances are very slim. Plan B is well known for messing up our periods. You might have taken it in the past and not had it affect you, but your past experiences won’t necessarily guarantee your future experiences. Plan B packs a heavy dose of hormones, so my bet is with Plan B. However, there’s a slight chance that the level of hCG in your urine is still low. You could take a blood pregnancy test (my bet is that it would be negative) or, you could wait a couple more days and then take another home pregnancy test. Be sure to take it first thing in the morning with your concentrated urine to maximize the amount of hCG that just might be in your urine. But my bet is still that it’s just Plan B messing with your cycle.

    Best of luck!
    Hannah

  28. sooooooo worried! says:

    Dear Hannah,

My bf and I had sex on day 13 of my cycle. The condom broke! I took next choice around 65 hours after sex. I’m pretty sure I was ovulating due to white-egg like discharge. However, my cycle calender says I shouldn’t ovulate til the 20th. My periods are always off due to thyroid.
What’s my chances of being pregnant? Will the pill work if I had already ovulated?

    Please Help!
