hippolover (age 20) writes, “Dear Hannah, I had my last period May 8th and it ended on the 12th. Later that day my fiance and I had unprotected sex. About a week later my abdomen starting feeling like nothing I could describe. Then backaches, followed by headaches. And lately I have been feeling nausea when I wake up in the morning. I calculated my period to have hit June 5th. And nothing yet. On May 23rd, my fiance and I had unprotected sex again. I’m really worried, could I be pregnant?”
Dear hippolover,
Most likely, the first time you had sex (May 12th), you did not get pregnant. While some people have gotten pregnant on the day their period ended, the chances are pretty slim. Now, it is important to remember that sperm can live inside your body for up to 5 days after your fiance ejaculates the semen into your vagina. However, ovulation, on average, doesn’t take place until midcycle (i.e. about 14 days after the start of your last period) and, by having sex on the last day of your period, that keeps the sperm with a life of up to 5 days still away from any egg being released. It’s hard then to say what might have caused your initial symptoms you experienced a week after having sex on the 12th.
Now, moving forward to your May 23rd incident with unprotected sex. If you ovulated anytime between May 22 – May 27ish, then you could very well be pregnant. It is said that for each cycle during which a girl has unprotected sex (even if it is her first time ever having sex), she is at a 20-25% risk of becoming pregnant. May 22 would be around midcycle for you which is when ovulation, on average, happens. Now, the exact date ovulation occurs will vary from person to person. However, having sex then is definitely a very high risk time, and if you are both very fertile, then your odds are only higher.
Your best bet will be taking a home pregnancy test tomorrow and (if that one reads negative) a follow up test in a week. Ideally, take the urine HPT first thing in the morning with your concentrated urine.
Please keep us posted!
Best luck,
Hannah
June 10 update:
Dear Hannah,
Hello this is hippolover updating you on my findings. No I am not pregnant, but what I was feeling was a kidney stone. That is why I had the backaches, and the nausea, and my guess the headaches were from all the stress from the backaches and nausea. But anyways, I had a one millimeter stone. I actually just went to the hospital in an ambulance yesterday at 8am and left the hospital at 2pm. But for three hours they could not give me anyway pain medication because they had to determine whether or not I was pregnant. Which again, I wasn’t. So there is your update.
Hippolover,
Yowsers! I hope you are feeling much better now! That’s a lesson for us all that, many times, something else could be the issue. Thanks much for the update!
Hannah

I’m really worried that I may be pregnant. I had unprotected sex on early in the morning on june 27, which was the day I was most fertile. After we were done he said he came inside of me. He took me in the morning to get next choice. A few hours later I felt sick, and The next day I had horrible back pain that made me stay in bed. Now its july 2nd and I haven’t had any spotting, or bleeding but as soon as I woke up I puked up spit. (last night I was sick as well.) I’m supposed to start on the 11th, but I’m just really worried that I’m pregnant, could I be?
